About This Book

New Discovering Mathematics 1A · Interactive Edition

New Discovering Mathematics is a series of textbooks written with a learner-centric approach that builds upon the knowledge and skills learnt in primary school. It is based on the latest O-Level Mathematics syllabus implemented from 2020 by the Ministry of Education of Singapore.

The emphasis of this series is on empowering students to learn mathematics independently and effectively with focus on fostering interest in mathematics. New Discovering Mathematics is organised into three content strands: Numbers and Algebra, Geometry and Measurement, and Statistics and Probability to facilitate in the acquisition of concepts and skills. Activity-based learning in the form of class activities and exercises allows students to play an active role in the learning process, enhancing the learning experience. This enables the development of a deeper understanding and appreciation of mathematics through greater awareness of the connections between ideas within mathematics as well as between mathematics and other subjects.

The content is structured to develop confidence in students by establishing strong mathematical fundamentals. The examples provided are clear and engaging with diagrams, where appropriate, to illustrate key concepts. Students are encouraged to self-reflect and contextualise what they have learnt, promoting metacognitive awareness. This encourages them to go beyond simply presenting a solution to a mathematical problem, which supports good learning habits.

The series also aims to develop reasoning, communication, modelling and metacognitive skills through the activities and exercises, including problem-solving tasks and problems in real-world contexts. Students are provided with opportunities to apply mathematical skills and concepts to solve these problems.

Information and Communication Technology (ICT) skills and coding tasks are included to develop students' computational thinking. National Education (NE) values have been incorporated whenever appropriate.

Three content strands in this volume (1A)

Numbers and Algebra

Chapters 1–5: factors and multiples; real numbers; approximation and estimation; basic algebra and algebraic manipulations; simple equations in one variable.

Geometry and Measurement

Chapters 6–7: angles and parallel lines; triangles, quadrilaterals and other polygons.

Statistics and Probability

Not covered in 1A. Introduced in later volumes.

About this Interactive Edition

This digital companion is designed for Chinese students who are learning mathematics in English. The interactive features are layered on top of the textbook content — you should still read the printed book; this version simply makes the practice and review parts work better on a tablet.

What it adds:

💡 给中国学生的提示:每章节学习时,建议先看原书纸质内容理解概念,再到本互动版完成练习和巩固。这套互动机制的目标不是替代教材阅读,而是把"练习—批改—复习"三步做得更紧密。
