Factors and Multiples
Modern encryption technology is essential to the workings of our modernised society. It makes use of the mathematics behind prime numbers to secure our data. From online payments and mobile banking to simply uploading our files online, encryption helps to protect our information from being misused or stolen.
Go on the Internet and find other instances where prime numbers are applied in our daily life.
In this chapter, we will learn to:
- identify prime numbers and composite numbers;
- express a composite number as a product of its prime factors;
- find the highest common factor (HCF) and the lowest common multiple (LCM) of a group of numbers by using prime factorisation;
- find the square roots and cube roots of numbers by using prime factorisation; and
- solve real-life context problems involving HCF and LCM.
