Completed in 1989 and located in the main courtyard of the Louvre Palace in Paris, the Louvre Pyramid serves as the main entrance to the Louvre Museum. Standing at a height of 20.6 metres, the large glass and metal pyramid was constructed with 70 triangular and 603 diamond-shaped glass segments.
The use of parallel lines in the pyramid's design gives it its modern and defining appearance. Every diamond pane is bounded by four lines — and across the surface, those lines fall into two families: each family is mutually parallel.
Why do parallel lines look so striking in architecture?
When two lines are parallel, they never meet — but every other line that crosses both (a transversal) makes the same set of angles with each. The eye picks this up instantly as "order", "balance", "rhythm". In Chapter 6, we'll turn that intuition into 3 precise rules: corresponding angles are equal, alternate angles are equal, co-interior angles add to 180°. Once you know them, you can find every angle in a complex figure from just one given.
